Mt. Independence State Historic Site, Orwell Vermont

In 1776, 12,000 American soldiers built a fort on a promontory above Lake Champlain to defend against anticipated British attack from the North.  The remains of this historic fortification can be viewed at Mt. Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont.  ORW developed a trail master plan, and later provided oversight for the construction of a 2.5 mile ADA accessible loop trail, named the Baldwin Trail after a soldier at the Mount whose diaries contributed to the understanding of its history.  ORW also managed the development of interpretative signage for the Baldwin Trail.  As a Revolutionary War site, the Mt. Independence trail plan, ADA loop and interpretative signage program was an endeavor that required the utmost care to site a trail and place signs within a very historic and ecologically sensitive landscape. The project also required particular attention to design details and materials to provide an appropriately dignified and durable aesthetic for this site. The Baldwin Interpretative Trail at Mt. Independence won a Merit Award from the American Association for State and Local History (2008). The Mt.Independence Trails Master Plan was awarded a Vermont Chapter ASLA Award (2001).
