The village of Putney is a classic Vermont village that is experiencing pressure for new housing development. Much of the new housing activity has been going to rural areas which leads to sprawl and other undesirable impacts. The objective of this study was to help residents explore and visualize how higher density ‘village housing’ housing could be accommodated within the existing village fabric where residents could walk to shops and public institutions such as the library and Town Hall. The focus of this effort was a ‘charrette’ or design workshop that engaged residents in visualizing and organizing development on three different sites within the village that ranged from a large single-family lot to a hillside site within the north village center and a site comprised of several parcels around the Putney Coop. The organization of the site emphasized a traditional Vermont village vocabulary in terms of the arrangement of buildings and open spaces within the various infill sites. This project won an award from Smart Growth Vermont (2006).
