Memorial to the Old Man of the Mountain, Franconia Notch New Hampshire
Sometime in the wee hours of May 3, 2003, New Hampshire lost its beloved Old Man of the Mountain to the forces of time and nature. The demise of the granite icon led to a governor-appointed task force charged with developing ways to memorialize the Old Man. ORW worked with the Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund and managed a national design competition for the memorial itself. The winning design, by Ron Magers and Shelley Bradbury of Massachusetts, provided for ‘profilers’ -- steel rods aimed at the spot where the Old Man once stood -- allow visitors to ‘see’ the Old Man once again and granite monoliths recreating the old man on the entry path to Profile Lake. The ‘profilers’ are under installation.
