The Hanover Co-op Community Market provides a new model for a neighborhood-scaled grocery store that is attractive for pedestrians, bikes, transit riders and cars alike, and is a refreshing break from the ever expanding big-box grocery store surrounded by acres of asphalt on a commercial strip. The 5,500 square foot Hanover Co-op community market (opened in 2008) is located on a gateway site to Hanover’s Dresden neighborhood. Before redevelopment, the site was a gas station with a small convenience store. The site plan for this store, with a pedestrian orientation, played a pivotal role in reshaping an evolving highway service commercial node into a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood center. The site plan features a patio for outdoor dining, a generous entry plaza and sidewalks connecting to the surrounding homes and businesses. The market includes many ‘green’ building and site design features, including geothermal energy, daylighting, on-site landscaped stormwater treatment areas, pedestrian-oriented design, accommodation of bikes and a local transit stop. This project was awarded an Honor Award from AIA New Hampshire (2009) and a Merit Award from Plan New Hampshire (2011).
